Coastal Trails

The Broken Coast (Costa Quebrada) is an open-air geology lesson. Its geological history dates back 125 million years, and this coast is composed of fossil stratifications from that era. The Broken Coast is specifically located on a geological fold, and marine erosion and the passage of centuries have transformed this area into a perfect combination of abrasion platforms and cliffs.

And between cliff and cliff, what we will find are wild coves and coastal enclaves that look like they are from another planet. Welcome to the most beautiful green coast of Cantabria.

Wonderful locations to wander and enjoy…

The coastal stretch in the vicinity of Liencres is known as Costa Quebrada, or «Broken Coast». Just with this name, it’s easy to imagine a place full of resounding and unbelievable cliffs, enormous rocks, striking islets, small peninsulas, secluded coves, and a succession of isolated beaches that open up to the wild Cantabrian Sea. But this time, reality far surpasses the imagined, and the best way to verify it is to discover this beautiful and breathtaking geological landscape on foot.

The walking route begins in the Liencres Dunes Natural Park, next to the mouth of the Pas River. The marked trail allows you to stop at the best viewpoints and enjoy a rich substrate that facilitates the reconstruction of a geological history spanning more than 100 million years. You can also access beaches as beautiful as Somocuevas, Arnía, and Covachos. Precisely upon reaching the latter, it is advisable to begin the return to the starting point and complete the 10-kilometer route.
