Twelve thousand years ago, the last hunter-gatherers who inhabited the Cantabrian Cornice used charcoal to sketch inside a small chamber. They depicted the final cold-climate animals to live in this region before their extinction, such as reindeer and a bison, alongside ibexes and horses. As they journey through the interior, visitors will be amazed by the cave’s true geological treasure: spectacular limestone formations including columns, colorful flowstones, disks, and delicate stalactites and stalagmites that lend an air of fragility to several of its chambers.

Located on Mount Castillo and just 600 meters from El Castillo Cave, Las Monedas Cave was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008 due to its rock art. It owes its name to the discovery of a hoard of coins dating back to the reign of the Catholic Monarchs (Reyes Católicos), found deep inside the cave.
