Coastal Natural Parks
With different categories and under various forms of protection, from national parks to nature reserves and geological sites of interest, Cantabria holds an important natural heritage, with many highlights along its coast.

Natural protected areas
The Oyambre Natural Park is located to the west and is a compendium of the traditional landscapes of the coast, with small villages, meadows dedicated to livestock, extensive beaches, dunes, and cliffs.
For its part, the Dunes of Liencres and Costa Quebrada is made up of a delicate dune system, the most extensive in the region, and a phenomenal geological ensemble of rock formations that extends beyond the foothills of the park itself, reaching the northern coast of Santander.
To the south of the Bay of Santander, which for the most part is also a Special Protection Area for Birds, you will find another natural space, the Peña Cabarga massif, a natural viewpoint from which you can appreciate the vastness of the Cantabrian landscape, bordering the https://parquedecabarceno.com/.
The most relevant geographical feature of the eastern coast is formed by the Bay of Laredo and the Santoña Estuary, which give rise to the Santoña, Victoria and Joyel Marshes Natural Park, a wetland system that is key as a refuge and stopover for birds on migratory routes between northern Europe and Africa.
In addition to this catalog of protected areas, there are a good number of enclaves of extreme natural beauty, which, despite not having a more specific protection status, are no less interesting. Examples of this are the Tinamenor and Tinamayor complex, at the mouth of the Deva and Nansa rivers, near Unquera; the cliffs of El Bolao, in Toñanes; those of Cabo de Ajo in Bareyo; or the Monte Candina massif and Pico Cerredo, rugged mountains that rise from the Cantabrian Sea itself, embracing the mouth of the Agüera River, between Liendo and Castro Urdiales.
