Cantabria, Land of Waves: Celebrate International Surfing Day Where It All Began.

The summer Arrives, the Sea Awakens, and Cantabria Has Something Special to Tell You. Every year, June brings with it one of the most celebrated events in the global surfing community: International Surfing Day. A day dedicated to honoring a sport that blends strength, balance, respect for the ocean, and a generous dose of adrenaline. And if there is one place in Spain where this occasion deserves to be celebrated in all its intensity, that place is Cantabria.

Here, surfing is not a trend. It is part of the coastline’s DNA. It was on Cantabria’s beaches that, in the early 1960s, a Santander native named Jesús Fiochi brought back from France some of the first surfboards ever seen riding the Atlantic waves. Since then, the Cantabrian Sea has shaped generations of surfers, hosted international competitions, and established this stretch of coastline as one of Europe’s most respected surfing destinations.

An Ocean for Every Level

One of the greatest strengths of surfing in Cantabria is that there is no excuse to stay on shore. The diversity of its beaches and the consistency of its waves make the region an ideal destination for both first-time surfers and seasoned riders seeking their next challenge.

Taking your first steps on a board? Head to Somo, in the municipality of Ribamontán al Mar. With more than seven kilometers of white sandy beach and long, predictable waves, it is widely regarded as the surfing capital of northern Spain. Just 20 minutes from Santander—and with the romantic option of arriving by boat across the bay—Somo offers surf schools, surf camps, specialist shops, and a unique atmosphere that has attracted surfers from around the world. It is also home to Spain’s first officially designated Surfing Nature Reserve and the renowned Cantabrian Surf School, which since 1991 has introduced thousands of people of all ages and nationalities to the sport.

If you already have some experience and want to continue progressing, beaches such as Berria (Santoña), with its expansive sandy shoreline and consistent waves, or Ris, in Noja, where surfing traditions run deep, provide the perfect setting to refine your skills in welcoming conditions.

Looking for something more challenging? Then Los Locos Beach in Suances should be on your list. Its powerful, fast-breaking waves, framed by dramatic cliffs and 750 meters of golden sand, offer the ideal playground for surfers eager to test themselves against the Cantabrian Sea at its most exhilarating. At the western edge of the region, Merón Beach in San Vicente de la Barquera delivers four kilometers of open coastline with strong, reliable waves that never fail to impress.

Four Surf Reserves, One Coastal Paradise

Cantabria boasts something truly exceptional: four officially recognized Surfing Reserves. Ribamontán al Mar, Suances, Noja, and San Vicente de la Barquera form a network of world-class surf spots that delight wave enthusiasts year-round.

These reserves are more than a recognition of excellent surfing conditions—they are living ecosystems where surf culture, environmental stewardship, and active tourism coexist in a balanced and sustainable way.

Exploring these four reserves is, in itself, an extraordinary journey along a coastline of green cliffs, charming fishing villages, valleys that stretch to the sea, and the dramatic backdrop of the Picos de Europa mountains.

Here, you surf with your feet in the water and your eyes on the mountains—a rare privilege found in very few places on Earth.

Learning to Surf in Cantabria: Easier Than You Think

If this International Surfing Day inspires you to take the plunge—literally—and stand on a surfboard for the first time, Cantabria offers a network of highly experienced surf schools that make learning safe, enjoyable, and far quicker than you might expect.

These schools teach much more than paddling and popping up. They also instill the essential principles of safety, etiquette, and respect in the water that are fundamental to responsible surfing. Most offer lessons for all ages and skill levels, from young children to adults with no prior experience, while many also run surf camps that combine intensive coaching with accommodation, local gastronomy, and complementary activities, creating a truly immersive experience.

As evening falls, a table filled with local specialties awaits: rabas (fried squid), cocido montañés (Cantabrian mountain stew), or the renowned Cantabrian anchovies, providing the perfect way to recharge before your next session.
