Picos de Europa
The National Park of Montaña de Covadonga became the National Park of Picos de Europa in 1995. It was created to protect the three massifs of these impressive Cantabrian mountains.
Over 100 years protecting natural
Its biodiversity and variety of landscapes comprise numerous distinctive species, many of them threatened, of the Cordillera Cantábrica mountain range. Over 1750 species and subspecies of plants share the park with a diverse wildlife that includes threatened species at both regional and European levels.
The most convenient way to access this magnificent setting is to go from Cantabria. Once there, you will be able to enjoy its multiple leisure activity options, aimed at nature lovers, thanks to the cableway of Fuente Dé. What is more, you will be offered the possibility to sleep at an altitude of 1,800 metres, at the Hotel Áliva, surrounded by mountains, meadows and an incomparable scenery, where you can join a scenic hike every day and then regain your energy with carefully made dishes, prepared with local products of the district of Liébana.
The cableway takes passengers to an altitude of 1,823 metres, by climbing up 753 metres in just four minutes. From the upper station, any visitor can have access to the breathtaking beauty of the scenery. This is also the starting point of many hiking routes if you want to enjoy the mountains.
The Áliva Hotel is a family business located at the upper level of the cableway of Fuente Dé. From there, you can join a scenic hike, enjoy an amazing starry night or delicious dishes made with typical products from the district of Liébana.
